Self Driving, AI Tesla Car Coming Soon, Says Elon Musk

Elon Musk claims Tesla is almost ready to launch a fully autonomous, self driving car.

In a series of tweets posted to his official Twitter account on Friday, Musk claimed that Tesla is almost ready to release a highway autosteer and parallel autopark software update.

The Model S Tesla already has a number of features which could be used in a self-driving vehicle, including a forward radar, a camera founded on the rear-view mirror, and a series of 12 sensors which surround the car and an detect approaching objects.

There are several issues that still need to be addressed before Tesla’s cars can be fully self-driving; for example, low contrast lane markings (faded white on grey concrete), and driving at dusk (with the setting sun impairing vision in both humans and computer-driven optics).

But Musk is confident that these problems will soon be overcome, tweeting that “the car will learn over time”.

Musk has of course been very outspoken on the subject of artificial intelligence, and was a recent signatory on the open letter requesting a ban on autonomous military robots.
